Grand Casino Dunedin Gaming and Services

Experience table games and electronic gaming machines in Dunedin's historic Southern Cross building.

Gaming Floor and Hours

Located at 118 High Street, inside the historic Southern Cross building, our doors open every day at noon, and we close only on Good Friday and Christmas Day. Regular hours run until midnight Sunday through Wednesday, but we stay open later on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. The gaming floor takes up most of the ground floor and is split into different sections. We’ve got between 150 and 180 electronic gaming machines set up in groups based on game style and stakes. Table games are together near the middle atrium, and the original flooring from 1883 remains visible beneath the tables.

Our machines work for all budgets, from smaller stake games to higher-limit ones. Every machine shows its betting limits on the screen before you put your money in. We always have staff walking around, ready to help if you’re not sure how a game works or which machine to try. For new visitors, staff are always available to assist with any questions about games, dining, or amenities on site.

To come in, you’ll need to show an approved ID. We offer several table games, including Blackjack, Roulette, Baccarat, and Caribbean Stud Poker. What’s available depends on the day and time, but on busy evenings most tables are running, while on slow weekday afternoons there are fewer.

Table Games and Seating

Blackjack tables can fit up to seven players at once. Minimum and maximum bets for each table are marked on the table sign. You swap your cash for chips with the dealer directly at the table. Games use multiple decks and shuffling is done right in sight.

The casino runs European Roulette, with classic inside and outside betting areas. Different minimum bets apply depending on which part of the layout you use.

Baccarat and Caribbean Stud Poker tables are open for play in the evenings and on weekends. These tables don’t take reservations - it’s first-come, first-served. If you want to watch a game before sitting down, you’re welcome to stand at specially marked spots.

Entry Requirements

Anyone entering the gaming floor must be at least 18 and have valid identification. Accepted options are: a New Zealand or overseas passport, a NZ photo driver licence, a HANZ 18+ card, or any government-issued photo ID that shows birth date. We don’t allow photocopies, digital photos, or expired documents. Overseas guests should use passports; locals usually bring a driver licence or HANZ 18+ card.

Our security team checks every ID before admitting guests. They compare your photo to you in person, confirm your birth date, and make sure your document is genuine. Anyone without the right ID can’t come in, there are no exceptions.

We enforce an Identified Exclusion policy for people who self-identify as problem gamblers or are flagged by staff. If you’re on that list, you can’t enter until your exclusion is over. Our team is trained to spot and enforce these rules.

Grand Rewards Loyalty Program

The Grand Rewards program lets you collect points for your play, take part in members-only draws, and get discounts at our restaurant. To sign up, visit the customer service desk with the same ID you use for entry.

New members get a physical rewards card within minutes. Once you’ve got your card, you use it at the table or insert it into a machine before you play - that’s how points get tracked. Here’s the process to enroll:

  1. Go to customer service with your ID
  2. Fill out a form with your contact info
  3. Show your ID for a staff check
  4. Take your rewards card and PIN
  5. Activate the card at any machine
  6. Insert card before play to start earning points

Check your points or available rewards anytime with the help of our staff at customer service. The program includes exclusive promotions for members, and entry depends on points you’ve earned over set periods. You also get food and drink discounts at Grand Bar and Restaurant by showing your card before you order.

Points stay valid if you use your card at least once every 12 months. If there’s no activity for longer than a year, the account can be suspended, and you may have to re-enroll.

Grand Bar and Restaurant

Our restaurant opens at noon daily, just like the casino floor. The kitchen serves up modern Kiwi favorites and seasonal meals, and the menu rotates every so often. We have booth seating along the edge, high-top tables by the bar, and regular tables in the middle. Reservations are optional. To make a booking, call +64 800 477 4545 during open hours - we always have some walk-in seating too.

The bar carries a mix of wines from New Zealand, a selection of craft beers, and familiar spirits. Drinks service goes on past the kitchen’s close, right until the casino shuts for the night. If you’re a Grand Rewards member, just show your card and you’ll get a discount before paying.

Prices line up with casual mid-range dining around Dunedin. Dishes are sized for either solo diners or sharing, and the kitchen handles dietary requests when you ask. Our team can go through any questions about ingredients.

Heritage Building and Location

We’re based in the Southern Cross Hotel building, built in 1883 by Italian architect Louis Boldini. The structure earned heritage-listed status in 1989, with features like Victorian-style plasterwork, a sweeping marble staircase under a domed roof, and original mosaic floors. At the time of its construction, the building was considered among the most grand hotels in the southern hemisphere.

We first opened on October 6, 1999 under a 25-year licence. It started as Dunedin Casino and became the casino with a full update and rebrand in 2021, paying tribute to the building’s history.

The venue is at the corner of Princes Street and High Street in the Exchange district, just half a kilometer south of Dunedin’s city center. It’s a quick walk to downtown hotels, public transport, and city sights.

2024 marked our 25th anniversary, and we’re now working towards a new 15-year licence to keep welcoming guests far into the future.
