Blackjack Tables and How We Play
Step into our 118 High Street venue in central Dunedin and try out classic blackjack at tables managed by professional dealers. Our home is a bit of a local landmark, built back in 1883 thanks to Italian architect Louis Boldini. At every blackjack table, we use six or eight decks, sticking to the same rules no matter your seat. All cards are dealt face up for transparency.
The casino opens every day except Good Friday and Christmas Day. You’ll find up to three players per betting box. Guests must be 20 or older and are required to present identification upon entry.
Here, every player starts with two cards, and the dealer receives one card face up. Get as close to 21 as possible but don’t go over. If your first two cards make blackjack, your payout is 3:2.
Players are required to physically indicate decisions during blackjack games. We stick with hand signals: tap the felt for another card, wave your hand flat if you’re standing. That’s our way to keep things straight for both players and the dealer.
Doubling down allowed except on two aces - you double your bet, get one card, and that’s it. Split pairs are allowed and aces can be split once only. If the dealer shows an ace, insurance for half your bet is available.
You’ll need chips to play. Buy them from your table or at the cashier - no betting with bills, and all chip values are clearly marked. Chips purchased from gaming tables can be redeemed at the Cashier.
| Blackjack Action | Rule | Payout |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Win | Beat dealer | 1:1 |
| Blackjack | Ace plus 10-value | 3:2 |
| Insurance | Dealer shows ace | 2:1 if dealer has blackjack |
| Push | Tie with dealer | Bet returned |
Gaming Floor and Table Layout
Inside, a selection of table games is ready on most nights, with blackjack taking up a big portion alongside Roulette, Baccarat, and Caribbean Stud Poker. Depending on when you visit, we bring in extra tables during busier hours, then close a few when things quiet down.
Our main floor has the action right up front, and we make sure each blackjack table is easy for both our dealers and guests to watch. You’ll always see clearly marked bet minimums and maximums right at every table.
Away from the tables, we also have over 180 electronic gaming machines with denominations from 1 cent to 1 dollar. We keep slots apart from blackjack so you’re never crammed for space.
Late afternoons you might hear the large bingo room open up in its own section, with seating capacity of 130 for scheduled sessions.
Grand Rewards Program
If you’re a regular at our blackjack tables or slots, join Grand Rewards and start earning points from every game. Points add up when you scan your card before playing, so you won’t need to keep track yourself.
Members enjoy exclusive draws, savings at the Grand Bar and Restaurant, and invites to member-only events. The exact earning rates for points can change, since tables and electronic machines have their own pace. Sometimes we run special point promos that adjust your earn rate too.
To join, visit our customer service desk near the entrance. All we need is a valid ID, such as a New Zealand passport, overseas passport, driver license, HANZ 18+ card, or official photo ID showing your date of birth. You’ll get your card right away and can start using it on the spot.
You can always check your points via our mobile app for Android. The app shows your latest points, details on draws, menus, and events. The app is for account info and updates, not for gaming.

Playing Responsibly
We take gaming safety and responsible play seriously. All our staff are trained to spot problem gambling. If you want to step back from games, we can help through our Identified Exclusion program.
You always have the option to put yourself on a temporary or permanent exclusion list. If you do, our team checks IDs to ensure we respect your choice, and we keep all records private.
Support lines and help info are posted throughout the venue, from restrooms to ATM spots and at every exit. For extra caution, you won’t find ATMs on the gaming floor - so bring cash ahead. We do offer foreign currency exchange at the main cashier, though a small fee may apply.
Food, Drinks, and Facilities
Feeling hungry? Our Grand Bar and Restaurant is open daily from 12pm, serving classics, seafood, Chinese dishes, and seasonal meals. Separate seating means you can eat without playing, but you must be 20+ to enter the restaurant, just like the tables.
Reserve a table through our app or call us on 03 477 4545. If you walk in, we’ll seat you as soon as a table’s free. Grand Rewards members do get priority during peak dinner hours.
Full wheelchair access is provided on the main level, including accessible restrooms. Free WiFi is available for all our guests.
Parking is street-side or in nearby public lots since we don’t run our own car park. Our building stands next to the Southern Cross Hotel, so it’s easy to spot within the Exchange district.

Our Licensing and Regulations
For clarity: Owner Lani Hagaman oversees operations. Our business is regulated by the New Zealand Gambling Commission in line with the Gambling Act 2003.
We opened in 1999 and later used the Grand Casino name at the same 118 High Street location, with the building and main services remaining the same throughout.
To follow New Zealand law, we’re strict about ID and age. Anyone playing must pass our entry checks; we don’t permit checks just at the table.
One last thing - we only offer blackjack and other casino games in our Dunedin venue. We do not run any online casino or mobile betting for blackjack or other games. If you download our app, it’s for checking your points and Grand Rewards status, not for placing bets.
